Our Mission
To shelter animals until they find permanent homes, to educate the community about responsible pet ownership, and to advocate for the humane treatment of all animals.
The Humane Society Waterville Area is an open admission shelter which holds municipal contracts with 25 communities in central Maine. We care for 1,800–2,000 animals every year consisting of dogs, cats, and small animals such as rabbits, rats and birds.
We are a high placement shelter (97.5%!) and we are proud to go above and beyond for the animals in our care.
About us
Since 1970 HSWA has been a safe haven for animals in need. Our guiding principle is always quality of life for the animal. We are a high-adoption, open-admission facility. We don’t euthanize animals due to lack of space or poor health. We are proud that we go the extra distance with every animal that comes through our doors. Every life is precious and deserves a fighting chance.

Our Leadership
At the Humane Society Waterville Area, our team is driven by compassion, dedication, and a shared mission to improve the lives of animals in our community. Each member brings unique skills, experiences, and a deep commitment to making a difference.
